St. Luke Catholic Church
About Us
Our History
from "A Journey of Faith" by Brenda Nettles Riojas
St. Luke Catholic Church was officially established on January 15, 1974, and the first mass was celebrated four days later at Homer Hanna High School. Construction of the new parish church, hall and rectory were not completed until 1976. Until the construction was completed, Masses continued to be held at Homer Hanna High School and at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Old Port Isabel Road. Bishop John J. Fitzpatrick dedicated the new building on April 4, 1976. Monsignor Patrick Doherty served as the first pastor for the St. Luke Parish and remained until 1980. In 1992, with Father Juan Nicolau as pastor, St. Luke opened an education facility, and a gymnasium was added a year later.
